DIY Personalized tissue paper candle

I bought this candle on sale after the Christmas season and decided it needed some sprucing up. Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and so I decided to get into the quirky spirit of things. This is how I turned a boring white candle into one with a little more character.

I tried printing on tissue paper once and it didn't work. I thought I would give it another go with this project and it worked like a charm. Can’t remember what I did the last time that could have gone wrong but this is what I did this time.

I knew I wanted a heart shape and I knew the approximate size that I wanted it to be. I cut out a piece of tissue paper larger than that, trying to get as few of the folds as possible.

I placed the roughly square piece of tissue paper on top of a piece of regular printer paper and taped it down with masking tape. I have read how some people recommend placing the printer paper on top of the tissue paper, and Cutting the tissue paper so that it is a bit larger than the printing paper. They then recommend folding the tissue paper around the printing paper and taping the borders down. But that’s not what I did.

I was not particularly in the mood for serious measuring and my quote was quite small so I created a text box in word and placed it in the middle of the page. I then played around with fonts and size until I was happy. I removed the border of the box and placed the paper/tissue sheet into my printer. I printed the page as I normally would. There was a moment when it sounded like the paper was going to jam but just before I jumped up and rescued my printer it sorted itself out and printed my quote quite nicely on the paper/tissue sheet. Unfortunately I was so happy that I completely forgot to take pictures at this time. Oops!

With the tissue paper still taped to the printing paper I carefully traced a heart shape around the quote with a permanent marker. I suspected the permanent marker would “bleed” through the tissue paper a bit so I drew the heart a little bigger than I wanted it so that when I cut it out it would be the approximate size I was hoping for. I cut out the image, cutting through all the sheets of paper as I figured that this would help prevent the fragile tissue paper from tearing as easily.

Very carefully I applied a layer of candle podge to my cut out tissue heart, and stuck it on the candle. Here I worked quite carefully and gently because the tissue paper is quite fragile and I didn't want it tearing after all this. The paper had a tendency to curl a bit but it just happened to be one of those days where everything you do just works out. Once the heart was stuck onto the candle I applied another thin layer of candle podge over the tissue paper and waited for it to dry. It didn't take too long. Once it was dry I applied another thick layer of podge to the candle, just to seal it properly. And viola!
